The main
context of this course simply requires one to think of media technologies variably.
How in depth one chooses to do such depends on personal interpretation of the
readings, engagement in discussions, and one’s beliefs and experiences. I
find it most interesting and engaging to hear the thoughts, opinions, and
experiences from my classmates on the various media technologies
discussed. Therefore, in thinking about a significant media technology to
cover for a final presentation I knew the technology I wanted to research and
present was food related. Often times the technologies discussed in this
course contribute and impact people’s lives more as a luxury than a
necessity. Food, however, is a necessity. I also wanted to pick a
topic that was captivating to me so I could enjoy the research aspect of the
project. Currently, the agricultural practices in the United States,
which have spread abroad, have intrigued me from my initial encounter with
medias discussing the growing trend of using genetically modified seeds.
The practices and politics of genetically modified seeds were surprising to
me. In discussing topics with my classmates I was surprised that they
were unaware of the practice, which further solidified my choice for my final
presentation.
